Work backward from the contents

List the containers, drinks and cooling medium you plan to carry. Check internal dimensions rather than choosing only by an advertised can count. Keep food handling and safe temperatures separate from the marketing phrase ice retention.

The YETI Roadie 48 manufacturer page is one example of a specification source to read for dimensions, capacity conventions and handling features. We have not independently measured that product and are not presenting it as a ranked recommendation.

Add the full load before judging portability

Part of the trip What to include What can be missed
Loading the vehicle Empty cooler plus all contents A manageable empty unit becomes heavy
Rolling to the beach Surface and wheel design Sand differs from a paved path
Lifting over obstacles Handles, grip and available help Wheels do not climb every step
Returning home Meltwater and cleanup Drainage changes the task

Record mass in one unit consistently. A manufacturer load figure does not tell you whether a particular person can lift the packed cooler comfortably.

Inspect wheel and handle claims

Use the wheel design and operating instructions to narrow choices. Wheeleez’s terrain-specific wheel documentation illustrates why soft-sand transport is a distinct problem; it is not a direct test of a cooler’s original wheels.

Check handle extension, clearance, replaceable parts and the lid’s opening space. If the cooler will travel inside a wagon, verify both footprints and the wagon’s loading instructions rather than assuming the two products work together.

Require conditions for retention comparisons

A credible retention test would state starting temperatures, contents, cooling medium, ambient conditions, opening schedule, sensor locations and the end criterion. A claim of several days without those details cannot be compared cleanly with another brand’s number.

Our future protocol would publish repeated raw temperature logs and uncertainty. Until then, use this as a buying checklist, and combine it with the beach-wagon guide to plan the entire carrying route.
